Sora hit 1M downloads faster than ChatGPT

OpenAI’s new video-generation app, Sora, has reached a big milestone. It hit 1 million downloads in less than 5 days across all platforms. On iOS alone, it pulled in 627,000 downloads in its first week, beating ChatGPT’s 606,000 iOS installs in its first week. This is especially impressive because Sora is still invite-only.

Key Points:

  • iOS launch figures: 627,000 iOS downloads in first 7 days, compared to ChatGPT’s 606,000 in its first week.

  • 1M milestone: Bill Peebles from OpenAI said Sora hit 1 million downloads in under 5 days. This was quicker than ChatGPT’s launch.

  • Sora is invite-only and launching only in the U.S. and Canada. Still, it grew faster than ChatGPT did in its early days.

  • Strong daily numbers: On its highest day, Sora saw over 100,000 downloads on iOS.

Why it matters:

  • Demonstrates huge early demand and momentum for AI video tools, not just chat/text AI.

  • Shows that users are ready to adopt more visual, generative AI apps.

  • If Sora continues growing, it may become a major new platform in the AI landscape.

This distributed data storage startup wants to take on Big Cloud

Tigris, a startup, aims to challenge big cloud providers. They offer a distributed, AI-native storage platform. It secured $25 million in a Series A round led by Spark Capital. This funding will help it build its infrastructure and compete with big players like AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure.

Key Points:

  • Tigris is creating data centres that serve as storage layers. These layers will move with compute workloads. Data automatically replicates to where GPUs are running. This helps keep latency low for AI tasks such as training, inference, and running agents.

  • Addressing Cloud Egress Tax: The company points out that incumbents charge high fees when users move or access their own data from the cloud. These fees are often called egress fees. Tigris aims to be more flexible and efficient.

  • Rapid growth & footprint: Since launching in late 2021, Tigris claims 8× annual growth. It has data centres in Virginia, Chicago, and San Jose. It also plans to expand into Europe and Asia, including London, Frankfurt, and Singapore.

  • Backers & funding: Spark Capital led the new round, with help from existing investors like Andreessen Horowitz.

Why It Matters:

  • As AI workloads scale, data storage architecture becomes just as important as compute. Startups like Tigris combine storage and compute locality to grab a share of this infrastructure market.

  • If they succeed, cloud giants might have to rethink their pricing, infrastructure plans, and how users can move their data.

  • For organizations creating AI systems, tools like Tigris can improve performance or cut costs. This is especially true for workloads that are spread across regions or depend on many small files.

OpenAI’s Nick Turley on transforming ChatGPT into an operating system

Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT at OpenAI, said the team is transforming ChatGPT from just a chatbot into an “operating system” for apps and services. The goal is to allow developers to create directly in ChatGPT. Users can access many functions, like shopping, booking, and tools, all within the ChatGPT platform.

Key Points:

  • ChatGPT as a platform, not just a bot: Turley likens ChatGPT to web browsers. They aren’t operating systems, but they act like them by hosting various web apps. He wants ChatGPT to host apps you can open inside chat: for writing, coding, commerce, etc.

  • Apps and commerce are built in. OpenAI expects services like DoorDash and Uber to be inside ChatGPT. This lets users do things like order food, book rides, or shop without leaving the chat experience. OpenAI would take a share of transactions.

  • Developer access and privacy controls: OpenAI has set guidelines. Apps can only request data that is necessary for their function. They might add partitioned memory. This would let users select which conversation data to share with specific apps. For instance, users could keep health-related chats private.

  • Monetization and app placement concerns: The company is considering paid priority placement for certain apps in ChatGPT. They want to ensure this doesn’t harm the user experience.

  • Turley says that OpenAI's consumer side, like ChatGPT, aims to do more than raise funds. Its goal is to bring AI benefits to people. ChatGPT is the way OpenAI shares AGI to help everyone.
