OpenAI secures Microsoft’s blessing to transition its for-profit arm

OpenAI and Microsoft have made a nonbinding agreement. This will allow OpenAI to turn its for-profit arm into a public benefit corporation (PBC). Microsoft, OpenAI’s largest investor, has approved the transition. If state regulators approve this change, OpenAI could raise more capital and might go public later.
Key Points:
Nonprofit keeps control and gains a big stake: OpenAI’s nonprofit parent will still exist and oversee operations. It will also receive a significant equity stake in the new PBC — estimated to be worth over $100 billion.
Microsoft's Role Under Review: Microsoft currently has special access to OpenAI's tech and provides cloud services. The new agreement might reduce some of Microsoft’s exclusivity. This change comes as OpenAI wants to broaden its infrastructure deals.
Regulatory approval needed: The transition can’t happen yet. It needs approval from regulators in California and Delaware. The agreement is nonbinding. This means it’s an intention statement, not a final, legally enforceable contract.
Why this matters: This change could help OpenAI raise funds like a regular business. It may also improve governance, increase transparency, and balance profits with public good. It might also help reassure critics who are worried about how OpenAI governs itself.
Last day to amplify your brand: Host your Side Event at TechCrunch Disrupt 2025

Tonight at 11:59 p.m. PT, the deadline ends for applying to host a Side Event during TechCrunch Disrupt 2025. If you’ve been thinking of running a dinner, panel, mixer or anything special to boost your brand, now’s the time.
Key Points:
Brand visibility: Hosting during Disrupt Week in San Francisco (Oct 25-31) puts you in the spotlight. Over 10,000 founders, investors, and innovators are expected to attend.
No cost to apply: You don’t pay to apply. It’s free to propose your event idea.
Flexibility in format: Events can be anything — VIP dinners, happy hours, panels, casual meetups. You choose the format.
Promotion included: Once approved, TechCrunch promotes it in listings, agendas, apps, and their communication channels.
Why it matters: Hosting a side event helps you stand out. You can connect with decision-makers and spark conversations beyond the main sessions. This boosts brand visibility. It’s about capturing attention, not just having an audience.

We are entering a golden age of robotics startups

The robotics startup scene is thriving, not only due to AI advances. Other factors play a key role too. Better hardware, improved sensors, and cheaper computing are all important. Investor interest and real market demand are also rising. Together, these factors are driving robotics into what many call a “golden age.”
Key Points:
AI is an accelerator, but not the only reason. Yes, AI, like perception, computer vision, and learning models, gives robots better “brains.” However, other advances are just as important. These include hardware durability, cheaper actuators, more capable sensors, and energy efficiency.
Lower cost & better infrastructure: Manufacturing components, sensors, microcontrollers etc. are cheaper than before. Tools such as simulation environments and design prototyping, like 3D printing, allow startups to test ideas quickly.
Investor confidence and funding are rising. Startups are securing larger rounds, especially for ambitious robotics projects like humanoids, industrial bots, and autonomous machines. Investors are more willing to take hardware risk.
Real applications are emerging. Robots are now used in warehouses, agriculture, health, inspection, and logistics. These are not just laboratory demos — they’re commercially viable.
Challenges remain, but they are solvable. Robotics has challenges such as power supply, safety, robustness, scaling costs, maintenance, and regulations. But many of these are gradually being addressed.
Why it matters:
For entrepreneurs & engineers: this is a good time to build robotics ventures — the ecosystem support is strong.
For investors: hardware risk is still real, but the upside is becoming clearer.
Robotics will become more common in daily life. They can help with labour shortages, handle repetitive tasks, and take on dangerous jobs.
