OpenAI ropes in Samsung, SK Hynix to source memory chips for Stargate

OpenAI has signed letters of intent with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. They will supply memory chips for the Stargate AI infrastructure project. The demand is expected to reach up to 900,000 DRAM wafers per month as OpenAI scales its data centers.

Key Points:

  • Strategic partners chosen: Samsung and SK Hynix will be key memory suppliers for Stargate. They will help meet the huge compute needs for advanced AI models.

  • Memory demand forecast: We expect a need for about 900,000 wafers each month. The timeline for meeting this demand is still not confirmed.

  • Korean and global ties are nhgrowing. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman met with South Korea’s President and leaders at Samsung and SK Hynix to finalise agreements.

  • Samsung isn’t just about chips. Samsung's subsidiaries, like Samsung SDS, Samsung C&T, and Samsung Heavy Industries, will look into data centre design and building. They’re even thinking about floating data centres. These are offshore setups for cooling and space, and they’ll work with OpenAI on this.

  • South Korea’s AI push: SK Telecom, part of the SK Group, might help create a “Stargate Korea” data centre in the southwest. This will connect national infrastructure to OpenAI’s global goals.

Why It Matters:

  • Memory chips, especially DRAM and high-bandwidth memory (HBM), are essential for the performance of large AI systems. Partnering with the top players ensures OpenAI can scale.

  • This deal boosts Samsung and SK Hynix's power in the AI infrastructure supply chain. This area is now as crucial as model innovation.

  • Risks remain: delivering at such scale is hard. Logistics, energy, yields, and sustaining supply continuity will all be tested.

Meta plans to sell targeted ads based on data in your AI chats

Meta is updating its privacy policy. Now, it will include data from how users interact with AI products, like text and voice chats, for targeted ads. While users will be notified in October, there’s no option to opt out. The change takes effect December 16, 2025.

Key Points:

  • How it works: Your chats with Meta’s AI will update your profile (likes, follows, etc.). This info helps personalise ads and content on Facebook, Instagram, and other Meta apps.

  • Meta won’t use chat content about sensitive topics for ad targeting. This includes religion, politics, health, sexual orientation, and ethnicity.

  • Where and when: The rollout begins December 16, 2025. It will not apply to users in the UK, EU, or South Korea, due to stricter privacy regulations.

  • No way to opt out (for now): If you use Meta’s AI features, your interactions will help with ad targeting. The only way to stop this is to stop using those AI tools.

  • Other AI features include: This change isn’t just for chat. It also affects AI tools in smart glasses, image generation, and videos (like Meta’s “Imagine” and “Vibes”) if they’re linked to your Meta account.

Why it matters:

  • Your private chats—what you type or say to a chatbot—will become a new clue for advertisers.

  • It blurs the line between “personal assistant” and “advertising engine.”

  • Meta says it excludes sensitive topics, but many users still worry about their chat data being sold.

Google reveals its Gemini-powered smart home lineup and AI strategy

Google has updated its Home/Nest hardware with built-in Gemini AI. It also launched a new smart home software platform and a wider AI strategy. The aim: to make smart homes more conversational, flexible, and intelligent.

Key Points:

  • New & upgraded devices: Google showed off updated Nest Cam Outdoor, Nest Cam Indoor, and Nest Doorbell devices using Gemini. A new Google Home speaker (coming in spring 2026) and budget camera/doorbell (in partnership with Walmart) were also teased.

  • Gemini for current devices: Google will add Gemini features to existing devices that meet the hardware requirements. This way, users won’t need to upgrade.

  • Conversational AI at home: The smart home experience is being made more natural:

  • You can ask follow-up questions without repeating “Hey Google.”

  • You might do things like “I’m boiling eggs” and the system will set a timer, asking whether you prefer hard or soft boil.

  • You could chain commands like “turn off all lights but keep office light on.”

  • Smarter Cameras & Notifications: Gemini will cut down on noise by summarising events from camera feeds. It provides highlights instead of many alerts.

  • New “Ask Home” & app redesign: A new “Ask Home” feature lets you say what you want and have Gemini suggest or build automations. The Google Home app is being redesigned to be faster, more stable, and integrated with Gemini features.

  • Google is opening up its ecosystem. They are providing Works with Google Home partners new toolkits, like camera SDKs, SoC designs, and reference hardware. This will help other manufacturers create devices powered by Gemini.

  • Premium features & subscription: Some advanced smart home features need a Google Home Premium subscription.

Why it matters:

  • Google is shifting from “smart home devices” to “AI-enabled home experiences.” The goal is for your home to understand, converse, and act intelligently.

  • Making Gemini available to existing devices lowers the barrier for adoption.

  • By working with manufacturers, Google can expand its AI reach across different brands, not just its own.

  • The move raises expectations and competition in the smart home / AI assistant space (Apple, Amazon, etc.).
