OpenAI pauses Sora video generations of Martin Luther King Jr.

OpenAI has paused the option to create videos of Martin Luther King Jr. with its Sora AI platform. The decision comes after King’s estate and daughter raised concerns about “disrespectful depictions.” OpenAI says estate representatives can now ask to opt out, blocking their likeness from future Sora videos.

Key Points:

  • The pause was made at the request of Dr. King’s estate in response to offensive or inappropriate AI depictions created by users.

  • OpenAI said it supports free speech. It believes that public figures and families should control how their likeness is used in generative media.

  • Authorized representatives or estate owners can request that Sora not use their likeness in cameos.”

Meta previews new parental controls for its AI experiences

Meta will introduce parental control features for teens chatting with AI characters next year. These tools help parents block or monitor specific characters. They can also view conversation topics or turn off character chats entirely. Teens will still use Meta’s general AI chatbot. It will only reply with content that's suitable for their age.

Key Points:

  • Parents will be able to turn off chats with AI characters entirely for teens, or selectively block certain characters.

  • They’ll receive reports of topics that teens discuss with AI characters and with Meta AI.

  • The controls will debut first on Instagram (in English) in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia.

  • Meta limits the AI characters teens can chat with. They only allow those that meet age-appropriate standards. Parents can also set options, like time limits.

  • Meta confirmed that its content standards for teens will match a “PG-13” rating. This means avoiding topics like extreme violence, nudity, or graphic drug use in AI interactions.

ChatGPT: Everything you need to know about the AI-powered chatbot

ChatGPT is a conversational AI from OpenAI. It creates human-like text and more based on user prompts. It’s used a lot for writing, summarising, brainstorming, coding help, tutoring, and creative tasks.

Key Features & Capabilities:

  • Multimodal inputs: ChatGPT can handle text, images, and sometimes voice / audio inputs depending on the version.

  • Memory & context: It can remember parts of a conversation to maintain continuity (unless memory is turned off).

  • GPTs & apps ecosystem: Users can create “GPTs” — custom chatbots tailored for specific tasks or domains.

  • Autonomous agents: ChatGPT can do multi-step tasks. For example, it can fill out forms, place orders, or schedule events using its “agent” framework.

Usage & Scale:

  • Daily prompt volume: ChatGPT handles ~2.5 billion prompts per day, showing just how heavily it’s used globally.

  • Its penetration spans individuals, students, businesses, developers, content creators, etc.

Challenges & Risks:

  • Hallucinations & inaccuracies: It sometimes generates plausible but false or misleading content.

  • Bias & ethical issues: Because it’s trained on large datasets from the web, it can reflect societal biases and unwanted content.

  • Privacy & misuse: If prompts aren’t handled carefully, sensitive data might be exposed. This can lead to misuse for disinformation, spam, or impersonation.

  • Engagement optimization: Some features, like agreeability or “sweet talk,” can help keep users. However, this might reduce accuracy.

  • The teen/emotional risk frontier: OpenAI has created special rules and safeguards for minors and for those talking about mental health.

Recent & Future Developments:

  • OpenAI has been expanding ChatGPT’s agent capabilities to act on your behalf in more tasks.

  • New interface experiments (e.g. feed-style redesigns) are being tested to make the app more visually engaging.

  • Safety guardrails are always changing, especially regarding sensitive content. This is important for how the chatbot interacts with vulnerable or young users.
