Microsoft to lessen reliance on OpenAI by buying AI from rival Anthropic

Microsoft is expanding the AI tools in Office 365. It is adding tech from Anthropic and still maintaining its strong partnership with OpenAI. This strategic shift marks an important step toward diversifying its AI sources.
Key Points:
Dual-provider approach: Microsoft will now use models from both Anthropic, like Claude Sonnet 4, and OpenAI in Office tools. This includes Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
Why Anthropic? Internal tests showed that Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4 did better than OpenAI. It was great at automating financial tasks in Excel and enhancing PowerPoint slides.
To access Anthropic’s models, Microsoft will pay for their use through Amazon Web Services (AWS). This is a strategic move that involves a cloud competitor.
Microsoft confirms its partnership with OpenAI is strong. They are dedicated to working together on advanced “frontier” AI models.
Pricing remains unchanged: Even with the addition of Anthropic’s models, the cost for AI features in Office 365 will stay the same.
Why it matters: This change shows growth in enterprise AI strategy. Microsoft is adopting a multi-model ecosystem. This reduces reliance on one provider and customises AI for specific tasks. It reflects the industry's drive for flexibility, competition, and resilience by using diverse AI sources.
RSS co-creator launches new protocol for AI data licensing

A group of technologists and web publishers has launched Real Simple Licensing (RSL). This new system supports large-scale licensing of AI training data. Backed by RSS co-creator Eckart Walther, RSL aims to tackle rising copyright issues faced by AI companies.
Key Points:
Why now? After a major $1.5 billion copyright settlement between Anthropic and content creators, about 40 more lawsuits over unlicensed data are pending. There’s a clear need for a standard solution.
How it works (tech side): RSL allows publishers to share their licensing terms. This includes Creative Commons and custom licenses, all in a machine-readable format. They do this through their robots.txt file. This clarifies which content needs paid usage.
How it works (legal side): The new RSL Collective functions like ASCAP for publishing. It negotiates terms and collects royalties for publishers from a central hub.
Members involved are Yahoo, Reddit, Medium, O’Reilly Media, and Ziff Davis. Ziff Davis owns Mashable and CNET. Internet Brands, including WebMD, People Inc., and The Daily Beast are also part of this group. Supporters, who are not full members, include Fastly, Quora, and Adweek.
Publishers can choose flexible licensing options. They can opt for subscription payments, pay-per-crawl, or pay-per-inference fees. This means they earn money whenever AI models use their content.
Challenges ahead: It's tough to know when AI systems use or refer to specific content. Some models track data access, like Google's AI Search Abstracts. But, many struggle to connect usage to specific training data. Still, supporters argue that even imperfect tracking is better than none.
Why it matters: For AI firms, cheap scraped web data has been the norm.
RSL wants to change this mindset. They aim to create a unified licensing system. This way, content creators can earn fair pay without chasing every AI company.
Why it matters for everyone: AI models are changing how we engage with content. This makes fair use and fair pay more important than ever.
RSL provides a flexible and clear path for publishers. It gives creators control over their work and supports responsible AI development.
