Google Maps upgrades navigation in India with Gemini, safety alerts

Google is launching new AI features in Google Maps in India. This includes Gemini for hands-free help and better safety alerts for drivers. The updates will arrive for both Android and iOS users and support nine Indian languages.
Key Points:
The Gemini integration brings voice-based AI help while navigating. Users can ask questions, get suggestions about places, and receive help without typing.
Google is rolling out navigation alerts for India. These include alerts for ‘accident-prone’ roads in places like Gurugram, Cyberabad (Hyderabad), Faridabad, and Chandigarh.
Additional features:
Display of speed limits for nine Indian cities (Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Noida).
Proactive disruption alerts (like road closures, major delays, and diversions) will be sent even when users aren't actively navigating. Google teamed up with India’s National Highways Authority (NHAI) to get near-real-time data on highway conditions.
Google's localization effort for India is important. They focus on adapting to Indian languages, street naming conventions, user queries, and context as part of the rollout.
Why It Matters:
These updates show how big tech companies are adapting AI navigation and location services for specific markets. They focus on large, complex areas like India, which has many languages and varied road conditions.
Google aims to boost user engagement by blending AI support (Gemini) with safety features. This approach tackles real-world problems, such as road safety and traffic reliability.
For users in India, these features can make navigation easier and safer. This is especially true when driving or travelling long distances.
This boosts Google Maps' position against other navigation apps in India. It also shows that AI is becoming standard in location-based services.
Perplexity to pay Snap $400M to power search in Snapchat

Snap Inc. Perplexity has announced a deal to pay $400 million in cash and equity. This will allow them to integrate their AI-powered search engine into the Snapchat app. The feature will launch in early 2026. This will allow Snapchat users to access Perplexity’s conversational AI answer engine when they ask questions in the app.
Key Points:
The deal amounts to $400 million over one year, combining cash and Perplexity equity.
The integration gives Perplexity exposure to over 940 million Snapchat users.
Snapchat expects to recognise revenue from the deal starting in 2026.
Perplexity highlights that it won't use Snapchat-user data to train its AI model. This move addresses privacy concerns.
Snap’s shares jumped by about 18% after the announcement and strong Q3 results.
Why It Matters:
This partnership is a big step for social apps. It adds AI search and chat features right into their platforms. This change will transform how users find information on Snapchat.
For Snap, this deal creates a new way to earn money. It also boosts its stance against larger rivals like Meta Platforms and TikTok by offering better in-app experiences.
For Perplexity, this setup provides a huge distribution channel and proves its AI search technology.
It brings up bigger questions about “AI search in social apps.” How will it change user behaviour, content dynamics, data practices, and advertising models?

Apple nears deal to pay Google $1B annually to power new Siri, report says

Apple Inc. Apple is close to finalising a deal with Google LLC. This deal would have Apple paying about US $1 billion each year. Apple would get a custom version of Google’s Gemini AI model, which has 1.2 trillion parameters. This upgrade aims to significantly enhance Siri, Apple’s voice assistant.
The model will reportedly manage Siri’s summarisation and planning tasks. Other parts of Siri will still depend on Apple’s systems.
Under the agreement, the Gemini model will use Apple’s infrastructure, known as “Private Cloud Compute.” This means user data should stay within Apple’s ecosystem and won’t be shared with Google.
The revamped Siri is expected to debut in spring 2026, although the timeline and details may still change.
Why It Matters:
This deal shows that Apple knows it's lagging behind competitors in AI for voice assistants. It’s open to partnering instead of just developing in-house.
A 1.2 trillion parameter model is much bigger than Apple’s current models, which have about 150 billion parameters. This shows a huge jump in possible capability.
For Google, this partnership would boost Gemini's reach in Apple's ecosystem. This is surprising due to the competitive history between the two companies.
For users, this could mean a more capable Siri. It may handle multi-step tasks better, summarise information, and integrate across apps. However, it also raises questions about how Apple will manage privacy, control, and clear branding of AI features.
The move shows that even big tech companies, known for in-house development, often seek partnerships when they fall behind in the AI market.
